Service Times

8 am Rite 1

The 8 a.m. Rite 1 service, characterized by an older language style and pipe organ accompaniment, offers a unique worship experience. Many find it serene and contemplative. It is often described as the home of the 'friendliest 8 o'clock people in Christendom'.

10 am Rite II

This service includes hymns led by the choir and often includes special music.

During the service, a nursery is provided by background-checked and trained adults. A Sunday school class for 4—to 9-year-olds is also offered from Labor Day through May, providing an educational and engaging experience and staffed by background-checked adults and older High School youth. At the end of the service, children return to their families at the Eucharist.

Our 10-year-old and older youth are encouraged to acolyte in the service.

Coffee Hour After 10 AM Service

Following the 10 AM service, St. Philip’s coffee hour is the place to have conversations and catch up with the lives of fellow parishioners. Refreshments and desserts are available for adults and children.

Order of Service

Our service begins with praise to God through song and prayer. We then hear up to four readings from the Bible: typically, a passage from the Old Testament, a Psalm, a selection from the Epistles, and always a reading from the Gospels. The congregation usually sings or recites the Psalm together.

Following the readings, a sermon is delivered, offering an interpretation of the day's appointed scriptures.

After the sermon, the congregation participates in reciting historic creeds, offering prayers of the people, making a confession, and passing the peace. During this time, the offering is also collected.

The Eucharist

At St. Philip's, the Eucharist offers you the opportunity to come to the altar and receive the consecrated bread and wine. After receiving the bread, you may consume it immediately and then drink from the chalice as it is offered. Alternatively, you can hold the bread and wait for the priest to intinct (dip) it into the wine for you and place it on your tongue.

If you prefer to receive only a blessing, simply cross your arms over your chest when you approach the priest.

The Eucharist concludes with a final prayer of thanksgiving from the congregation, after which we are dismissed to continue a life of service to God and the world.
